Jules Dervaes, founder of the Path to Freedom urban homestead in Pasadena, will speak about his and his family's revolutionary journey toward a sustainable, self-sufficient life in the city. The Dervaes family is living a protest against the corporate powers that control the food supply by growing 6,000 pounds of organic produce a year on 1/5 of an acre. Through their adventures in growing and preserving their own food, installing a solar power system, home-brewing biodiesel for fuel, raising backyard farm animals, and learning back-to-basics skills, these modern-day pioneers have revived the old-fashioned spirit of self-reliance and resourcefulness.
